Sundew needs fresh substrate regularly, as the peat it contains decomposes over time. The carnivorous plant then thrives for many years. When is the best time to repot Drosera and what should you keep in mind?
How do I repot sundews correctly?
Repotting sundews can be done by carefully pulling the plant out of the old pot in spring, removing the old substrate, planting it in a new pot with fresh carnivore substrate and watering it well, preferably with rainwater.
The Best Time to Repot Sundews
You should always repot sundews in early spring. Then the plant recovers fastest.
If the plants are repotted every two years at the latest, they will delight you with their flowers and their unusual appearance for many years.
Prepare pots
Many Drosera species remain rather small, so the new pots do not necessarily have to be much larger than the old ones.
Make sure the planters are deep enough. Some species develop quite long taproots.
Fill the pots with carnivore soil (€12.00 on Amazon) or make your own substrate from white peat and quartz sand. Press the soil firmly.
Make a depression in the middle so that the sundew root has enough space.

Carefully pull the sundew out of the old pot. Be careful not to damage the taproot in particular. Shake off the old substrate as completely as possible.
Cut off all dried root parts. If you want to propagate your sundew, you can also take a few root cuttings.
Place the Drosera into the new soil and press the substrate firmly. Fill the pot with more substrate.
Water Drosera well after repotting
Place the repotted sundew in a water bath so that the substrate can soak up moisture. You usually have to refill water several times.
Use only rainwater for watering and later for watering. If none is available, use distilled water.
Tip
Sundews that you bought at the hardware store should be repotted as soon as possible. There are usually several plants in one pot so that the sundew appears bushier. Use a separate pot for each Drosera to save the plant the stress of frequent transplanting.
