Rose trellises in different shapes, colors and sizes are available in every hardware store. However, the one in the required size is not always available and some do-it-yourselfers prefer to build such a trellis themselves. This is also possible for people with the proverbial two left hands, because rose trellises are very easy to assemble.
How do I build a rose trellis myself?
To build a rose trellis yourself, create a sturdy wooden frame of the desired size, make a trellis out of wood, wire ropes or structural steel mats and attach it to the frame. Make sure there is sufficient distance from the wall and treat all materials to prevent weathering.
Building a frame out of wood
Before you start building, you should first consider how big the trellis should actually be. Small rose trellises are first screwed together and then attached; for larger ones, the frame must first be set up and then the trellis attached. For larger trellises, use two support beams and one cross beam, whereby the two support beams must be firmly anchored in the ground - otherwise the entire structure can quickly fall over, for example because the load from a very large climbing rose has become too great. These trellises are usually stable enough to be set up freely. For smaller trellises, a frame made of sturdy wooden slats is often sufficient, which are screwed together in the desired shape (it doesn't always have to be rectangular!) and attached directly to the wall. Make sure that the distance between the trellis and the wall must be at least 10, preferably 20 centimeters.
Make a suitable trellis: made of wood, wire ropes or structural steel mats
Once the frame is finished, you can start working on the trellis. There are various options: A trellis that is very easy to make consists of a wooden frame and a structural steel mat that has been flexed to the right shape and size - you can have these cut to size at the hardware store and just have to attach them to the frame at home. Another variant is to simply buy various wire ropes (€39.00 on Amazon) and stretch them into the frame as a trellis. However, both components - both the structural steel mesh and the wire ropes - rust quickly and should therefore be treated preventively. Wooden trellises, on the other hand, can be made from slats that are attached to the frame either in a grid pattern or simply as cross slats. The wood should also be treated with wood preservatives to prevent rot.
Tip
Not only must the trellis be built as stable as possible - roses in full foliage and bloom can reach a very high weight - the posts must also be firmly anchored in the ground, for example using so-called joist shoes and by setting them in concrete.
