How do I properly care for a cypress tree in the garden?

To successfully care for a cypress in the garden, choose a sunny, wind-protected location, nutritious, slightly acidic soil and water regularly. Protect the cypress from frost in winter and trim the hedge annually for dense growth.

Cypresses need a sunny location in the garden

The location in the garden should be as sunny as possible and somewhat sheltered from the wind. Cypresses do not thrive in the shade.

A cypress tree needs a lot of nutrients because it grows very quickly. The floor must therefore

  • nutritious
  • permeable
  • slightly sour
  • water storing

be. The cypress does not tolerate waterlogging. In compacted soils, it is advisable to ensure good drainage.

Create a cypress hedge as a privacy screen

Cypress trees grow quickly and densely. They can therefore be placed very well as a privacy screen in the garden.

Within the hedge, leave a planting distance of 30 to 50 centimeters. For one meter of cypress hedge you need two to three plants.

Hedges need to be cut at least once a year so that they stay dense and don't get too tall.

Properly care for cypress trees in the garden

To properly care for a cypress tree in the garden, you need to water and fertilize it regularly.

Watering is always done when the soil surface has dried. A cypress tree also needs to be watered in winter. To do this, add slightly warmed water on frost-free days.

Rainwater is particularly suitable for watering.

Protect from severe frost in winter

Cypresses are only partially hardy. Depending on the species, they can tolerate temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees for a short time. Longer periods of frost are very damaging to the trees.

If the cypress is in an unfavorable location, you must protect it from severe frost. To do this, place a blanket of mulch (€27.00 on Amazon) under the tree. Wrap the cypress with burlap or other suitable materials.

Young trees in particular are at risk from frost. Older cypress trees can cope with extreme cold even without additional measures.

Tip

Cypresses tolerate pruning well and can be pruned all year round. However, the best time to prune is before and after the growing season, which runs from April to August. However, sick branches should always be shortened immediately.
