How do I properly overwinter a blood flower?
To overwinter a blood flower successfully, place it in a bright place at 14-18 degrees Celsius, water it more sparingly and stop fertilizing from August. Under no circumstances should temperatures fall below 12 degrees, as this will affect flower formation the following year.
How to overwinter a blood flower
The blood flower comes from South Africa and is not hardy. It cannot tolerate any frost temperatures and should not be kept cooler than twelve degrees even in winter.
In spring and autumn, temperatures of around 20 degrees are ideal for the blood flower. From autumn onwards, keep them cooler for a few weeks. Wintering temperatures should be between 14 and 18 degrees, but never fall below 12 degrees. The winter location must still be as bright as possible. Avoid direct sunlight.
If you don't overwinter the blood flower in a cooler place, you'll wait in vain for new flowers next year.
Properly care for blood flowers in winter
From September onwards, the blood flower is watered more and more sparingly. During overwintering, only give enough water to ensure that the substrate does not dry out completely. From spring onwards, slowly increase the moisture supply again.
You are not allowed to fertilize blood flowers in winter. Stop fertilizing completely from August. From March you will start supplying liquid fertilizer again (€6.00 on Amazon). Only if you have repotted the blood flower in fresh substrate in spring will it not need any new fertilizer in the first few months.
Tip
The bulbs of the blood flower are delicate. If they are watered too heavily, they will rot and the plant will die. Make sure that you do not water too much or too little, and always pour off excess water straight away.
