How do I attach a flower box to a sloping roof?

To attach a flower box to a sloping roof, you can use roof steps for chimney sweeps as box stands. Mount the universal walking frost supports on softwood slats and attach them to the rafters. Then attach the running grid and fix the balcony box on it with wire.

Material list and tools

In order to position a balcony box on the window of a sloping roof, a roof step for chimney sweeps is converted into a box stand. The following materials for a 100 cm long flower box are available primarily from chimney markets and sometimes from hardware stores:

  • 2 running grid supports with fastening material for supports and running grids
  • 1 walkway grid with 1,000 mm length and 250 mm width
  • 2 slats made of softwood with a minimum dimension of 24 x 48 mm
  • 4 nails (3.8 x 110 mm)
  • 4 countersunk steel cross screws 4.5 x 30 mm or similar fastening material
  • Hammer
  • Stable ladder

You will also need a roll of wire to fix the balcony box on the fully assembled walkway grille (€29.00 on Amazon).

Instructions for assembly

The following instructions are suitable for installation on roofs with a slope of 22 degrees to 55 degrees. It is important to note that the softwood slats correspond to quality class II DIN 4074 to ensure maximum safety. The rafter cross section should be at least 60 x 80 mm. How to proceed correctly:

  • Mount the universal frost supports on the two slats using the countersunk steel cross screws
  • Then attach the battens to 2 rafters with 2 nails each
  • The battens must protrude 60 mm above the rafter on each side
  • The bottom edges of the frost supports must be flush with the roof tile

Supports and running grid are connected using profiled shims and M8 screws and nuts, which are included in the scope of delivery. It is important to note that the contact surface does not deviate from the horizontal by more than 3 degrees. We recommend grinding a U into the roof tiles in question in order to neatly lay the supports underneath. In this way you can avoid having to lift the roof tiles.

Attach the balcony box – this is how it works

Place the planted flower box in the middle of the running grid. Now you can use wire to connect the balcony box to the grille in a storm-proof manner.

Tip

Ready-made flower box holders for a sloping roof are rarely found in specialist shops. The company 'Tischideen' is one of the few providers. On request, the right holders for your roof pitch can be manufactured and painted in the desired color. The special flower box holders are attached according to the same principle as commercially available products.
