Ivy is absolutely hardy. Even deep frost over a longer period of time doesn't bother him. Only variegated varieties are not quite as frost-resistant. It is therefore better to grow them in pots, as this allows them to overwinter better.
How can ivy be properly protected in winter?
Ivy is hardy and does not require any special protective measures in the garden. For potted ivy, the soil should be protected by placing the container on an insulating surface and wrapping it if necessary. In winter, water regularly on frost-free days to avoid drought damage.
You don't have to overwinter ivy in the garden
The normal ivy in the garden does not need any special protection measures in winter. Only with freshly planted ivy can it be worthwhile to protect it from frost and, above all, drying out with a mulch cover in the first year.
Overwintering ivy in a pot
Special winterization is not necessary for deeper pots. If the ivy is cared for in the flower box, you should protect the soil from frost by placing the planters on an insulating surface and, if necessary, wrapping them with burlap.
Tip
The biggest problem with ivy in winter is dryness. If brown leaves appear in spring, this is rarely frost damage, but rather dried leaves. Therefore, in dry winters, water the ivy on frost-free days.
