Not all varieties of ornamental garlic are sufficiently hardy. They need overwintering. Then there are also those specimens that stand outside in the bucket. They should also be overwintered. But how?
How can you properly overwinter ornamental garlic?
In order to overwinter ornamental garlic successfully, frost-sensitive varieties should be dug up in autumn, cleaned and stored in sand or an airy box in the basement. Potted plants should be placed in a frost-free, cool place. Make sure that the wintering temperature is not too high.
Dig up and store onions
Very few varieties of ornamental garlic do not tolerate frost. You should dig up the bulbs of these in autumn:
- Cleaning onions
- place in a dry place to dry the surface
- layer in sand or overwinter in an airy box in the basement
- take it out again in spring
If your ornamental garlic is in the pot outside, it should also be overwintered. Otherwise the onion in the bucket risks freezing. Bring the bucket in and put it in a frost-free but cool place over the winter!
Tip
The temperatures shouldn't be too warm during the winter. Otherwise, the onion will sprout during the winter.
