There are various reasons why the volume of the plant needs to be reduced. Firstly, this measure is necessary in many cases to avoid winter damage. Some potted palms grow very sprawling and take up too much space in closed rooms.
How do you tie a palm tree correctly?
To tie a palm tree together, use soft plastic binding tape and work in pairs. Gently gather the leaves together and tie them carefully, but not too tightly. During wintering, additional steps such as a hose ring or a special binding frame can be used.
Tie up in living rooms
If you are forced to minimize the volume of the palm tree, you should definitely be careful not to destroy the habit of the plant. The overhanging leaflets or attractive fans are what make this plant so special. It would be a shame to squeeze it into a narrow framework, as this would cause it to lose its characteristic appearance.
Use soft plastic raffia for this measure (€6.00 on Amazon). Work in pairs. Have one person gently gather the leaves together and then tie them carefully and not too tightly.
Tie up for winter storage
Before moving to winter storage, it is sometimes necessary to reduce the space required by the plant. Proceed as follows:
- Gather the leaves together at the top.
- Do not tie too tightly with a rope.
- Do not wire under any circumstances, as the sharp and hard material will damage the fronds.
- Make sure that enough air can still circulate.
If the palm tree is to overwinter outdoors, the following procedure, which uses a hose ring, has proven successful:
- Tie opposite fronds together with raffia.
- Work from the inside out.
The foliage is then summarized:
- Place a piece of old garden hose under the palm tree. The length depends on how much the circumference of the plant should be reduced.
- Close the hose to a ring using a screw connection or mounting tape.
- Push carefully up.
- Additionally secure with raffia so that the hose ring does not slide back down due to the pressure of the fronds.
For large and old palm trees that are very valuable, it is worth purchasing a special tying frame. This is placed over the plant and closed so that the circumference is minimized but the leaves are not damaged.
Tip
Only tie palm trees together for overwintering if you protect them with additional winter protection made of fleece or with a mobile palm house. Otherwise, water could collect in the heart and lead to rot.
