What types of money trees are there?
The best-known money tree species (Crassula) include Crassula ovata (oval leaves), Crassula muscosa (shoots with scales), Crassula rupestris (fleshy leaves), Crassula arborescens ssp.arborescens (red leaf edges) and Crassula falcata (silvery leaves). They usually only bloom from the age of ten.
There are around 300 species worldwide
There are around 300 species of money trees known worldwide. In our latitudes, Crassula ovata is mainly kept as a houseplant.
In their natural environment, the plants can grow up to 2.5 meters high. Some species branch heavily, while others form mainly long shoots.
When kept as a houseplant, the money tree can get quite old. It is cut frequently so that it does not become too large and maintains its shape. It can also be easily cultivated as a bonsai.

Most money trees have green leaves that are very rounded or oval. Some species develop red edges or red leaves if they are left in direct sun for a long time.
The Chinese money tree is not Crassula, but a type of nettle.
The blossom of the money tree
Money trees bloom in winter. In its original homeland of South Africa, it blooms from June to August. Houseplants are difficult to get to bloom. Their flowering period begins in late winter or early spring.
Depending on the species, the flowers are white or yellow. They exude a sweet scent and resemble small stars.
Money tree is not hardy
Money trees therefore like it bright and warm. They only thrive at sufficiently high temperatures. In summer they prefer an ambient temperature of 20 to 27 degrees. Over winter it shouldn't get warmer than 11 degrees at the place.
The money tree is not hardy and cannot tolerate frost. It should never be colder than 5 degrees at its location.
Tip
Most money tree species only bloom when they are ten or more years old. They also need a significant change in temperature between summer and winter.
