The Spathiphyllum, also known as the single leaf or leaf flag, is one of the most popular houseplants in German living rooms. No wonder, after all, the decorative plant is quite robust and easy to care for. In addition to the large, dark green leaves, it is the white, characteristically structured flowers that make the plant so attractive - although, strictly speaking, the flower only consists of the inconspicuous bulb. The white “flowers” are bracts or bracts that turn brown and dry up after a while.

Why does my single leaf have brown flowers?

If single-leaf plants have brown flowers, this is a natural aging process. To keep the flowers fresh for longer, you should protect the plant from direct sun and high temperatures, increase the humidity and use lime-free water.

Keep flowers fresh for a long time with the right care

This process is completely normal, after all, every flower has bloomed at some point. However, you can do a lot to extend the lifespan of each individual flower - with the right care, they will look fresher for much longer. For this purpose

  • the leaflet must under no circumstances be left in the blazing sun.
  • Place the plant away from the window and in a darker place.
  • Although the tropical leaf likes warmth,
  • but this must not be dry: keep the humidity high.
  • The room temperatures should not be too high either.
  • Between 20 and a maximum of 25 °C are optimal for the single sheet.
  • Also keep the substrate slightly moist, but not wet
  • and fertilize the plant regularly with a fertilizer for flowering houseplants (€6.00 on Amazon).
  • Under no circumstances water with hard water from the tap!
  • Decalcified water or collected rainwater are best.

Remove dead flowers with scissors

When the spathiphyllum has finally bloomed, cut off the faded shoot just above the substrate surface. Normal scissors are sufficient for this, but they should be clean and disinfected. Continue to care for the single leaf well and wait for it to bloom again.

Tip

The single leaf can be fertilized very well with dried coffee grounds - this stimulates flower formation.
