To create a lavishly blooming and wonderfully fragrant hedge, the butterfly bush is a good choice. With a growth height of up to 300 cm, the easy-care Buddleja davidii acts as a flowering bulwark all summer long. Read here what you should pay attention to when planting.
How do I plant a butterfly lilac hedge?
To create a butterfly lilac hedge, plant the bushes in spring in nutrient-rich, humus-rich and permeable soil and a sunny location. A two-row arrangement with 70 cm planting distance within the row and 90 to 100 cm distance between the rows is recommended for a lush, opaque hedge.
Planting time is in spring
Butterfly lilacs grown in containers form a magnificent hedge in the same year when they are planted in spring. As soon as the ground has completely thawed and severe frosts are no longer expected, the window of opportunity for planting opens. In regions with mild winters, you can plant the young plants in the ground in autumn.
Wide range of location conditions
In order for the hopes of a magnificent flower hedge to be fulfilled, the following site conditions set the course:
- Sunny and sheltered location
- Nutritious, humus-rich and permeable soil
- Slightly acidic, neutral to alkaline pH value
Ideally, the soil at the location for the hedge is moderately dry to fresh, as a butterfly bush does not respond well to excess moisture.
In two rows it becomes lush and opaque
Where space allows, we recommend planting in two rows and staggered from each other. In the first row, choose a planting distance of around 70 cm. Place the second row at a distance of 90 to 100 cm from the front row. Here you place each butterfly bush on a gap, so that there is a planting distance of 70 cm.
Planting a butterfly bush is so easy
Before you pull a young butterfly bush out of the container, soak it with normal water until no more air bubbles appear. By enriching the excavation with compost (€10.00 on Amazon) and horn shavings, you will stimulate rooting and growth. Please maintain the previous planting depth, press the soil firmly for a good soil seal and water.
Tip
The key to perfect hedge care is annual pruning in early spring. Cut all butterfly lilacs back to 30 cm. From every branch with at least 2 eyes, a butterfly bush sprouts so quickly that it has reached its majestic size in time for the beginning of the flowering period.
