The ideal location for a butterfly lilac is sunny to partially shaded, warm and protected from the wind with loose, permeable, poor soil. A fresh to moderately dry environment and a slightly acidic, neutral or alkaline pH are also important.

- Sunny to semi-shady location
- Warm and protected from the wind
- Loose, permeable and rather poor soil
- Fresh to moderately dry
- Slightly acidic, neutral or alkaline pH value
- Sufficient distance to the plant neighbors of at least 100 cm
