With cuttings you can propagate your delicious window leaf in a single variety and easily. In order to take the high moisture requirements of the exotic foliage plant into account, the classic approach requires modifying an important detail. Find out how to do it right here.
How do I propagate a Monstera Deliciosa?
To successfully propagate a Monstera Deliciosa, cut a cutting with a he althy leaf, strong stem and at least one aerial root in spring. Place the cutting in a mix of standard soil and sand and keep the substrate slightly moist. Put over a transparent plastic bag to promote rooting.
Cut Monstera deliciosa cuttings correctly – This is how it works
Spring is the best time to take a cutting from its mother plant. Choose a young, he althy leaf that has a strong stem and at least one aerial root. Using a sharp, clean knife, cut the head cutting 0.5 to 1.0 cm below this aerial root. Then set the cutting aside for 1 hour so that the cut dries.
How to root in no time at all
While the interface on the cutting is drying, fill a sufficiently large cultivation pot with a mix of equal parts standard soil and sand. Proceed as follows:
- Place the cutting and its flexible aerial roots in the potting soil
- Watering with rainwater or stale tap water
- Keep the substrate constantly slightly moist in a partially shaded, warm window seat
- Do not give fertilizer
Your delicious window leaf will root more quickly if you put a transparent plastic bag over the cutting. Please ensure that there are no points of contact between the bag and the cutting. For example, 2 to 3 wooden sticks are suitable as spacers. To prevent mold from forming under the hood, it is ventilated daily in the morning and evening.
When a fresh leaf sprouts, the cover can be removed. After 4 to 6 weeks a stable root system will have formed so you can repot your young, delicious window leaf. Now the cultivation flows into the normal care program for an adult Monstera deliciosa.
Tip
If your delicious window leaf accidentally loses a leaf that breaks off along with the stem, do not throw it away. Although there is no finished aerial root on the offshoot, there is a good chance of rooting in the water glass. However, this variant of vegetative propagation takes 8 to 9 months until the cutting has developed its own root system.
