Hebe andersonii is a shrub veronica variety whose leaves are quite large - at least in comparison to other Hebe varieties. Large-leaved species are not winter hardy, even if this is often claimed in the trade. You should therefore only grow Hebe andersonii in a bucket.
Is the Hebe andersonii hardy?
The Hebe andersonii is not hardy because its large leaves can freeze at temperatures below minus five degrees. It is therefore recommended to grow this shrub veronica in a bucket and to overwinter it frost-free, bright and cool at five to ten degrees during the winter.
It's better to grow Andersonii in a bucket
Because of its large leaves, Hebe andersonii with its pretty purple flower candles is not hardy. You should therefore not plant this shrub veronica variety in the garden, but rather cultivate it in a pot.
Even if you provide sufficient winter protection outdoors, the Hebe andersonii, unlike the Hebe addenda variety, will almost certainly not survive a winter outdoors. As soon as it gets colder than minus five degrees outside for several days, the leaves freeze and the shrub veronica dies.
So plant Hebe andersonii straight away in a bucket or pot that you place on the terrace or balcony.
Hebe andersonii overwinter properly
In autumn it is time to bring Hebe andersonii into winter quarters. Beforehand, check whether there are any pests on the plant and take action if necessary.
For overwintering, Hebe needs a frost-free but as bright location in the pot as possible. Temperatures between five and ten degrees are optimal. For example, put them in
- the entrance area
- to a cool hallway window
- the cold winter garden
- a cool greenhouse
- a garage with a window
It is important that it is very bright at the winter location. If necessary, you can provide more light with plant lamps (€23.00 on Amazon). The humidity should not be too high.
Water moderately but fertilize occasionally
During the winter, the Hebe andersonii is only watered moderately. The pot ball must not dry out completely.
Unlike other plants, you can supply Hebe with liquid fertilizer every fortnight, even in winter.
As soon as it gets warmer outside again, take the Hebe andersonii out of their winter quarters and slowly get them used to warmer temperatures. If roots have grown out of the bottom of the pot, it is time to repot the shrub veronica in spring.
Tip
Hebe andersonii can also be cared for in your room. There it needs a bright location with only a little direct sunlight. To overwinter, place the perennial in a cooler but bright place.
