If you own a rather shady garden, you don't have to do without beautifully flowering plants. In fact, the choice between suitable species is quite large, only lilac (bot. Syringa) is not one of them. You'd better find a sunny spot for this one.
Can lilacs grow well in the shade?
Lilac prefers sunny locations and does not thrive optimally in the shade. In the shade, lilacs may bloom little or not at all and develop increased foliage. Rhododendrons, hydrangeas, elderberries or cornelian cherries are better suited for shady gardens.
Lilac is not a shade plant
The different types and varieties of lilacs do not feel comfortable in the shade and should therefore not be placed in such a place. Only so-called noble lilacs - depending on the variety - can tolerate a light, semi-shady location, while wild lilacs, on the other hand, should always be in the sun if possible - at least six hours a day. You may notice that your lilac may be too dark in its place. on these license plates:
- Lilac blooms little or not at all
- develops a lot of foliage
- sometimes the leaves can turn yellow
- Growth also stalls in very dark locations
- or. The lilac grows very slowly
These flowering shrubs are suitable for a shady location
But which plants are suitable for a shady garden if lilacs are out of the question? The following species, for example, are just as flowery and easy to care for:
- Rhododendron: ideal for shady locations with acidic soil, beautiful flowers
- Hydrangeas and climbing hydrangeas (Hydrangea): easy-care shrubs, not all varieties are hardy
- Yew (Taxus): many species and varieties with different growth habits, poisonous!
- Elderberry (Sambucus): you can make juice and jelly from the berries
- Cornelian cherry (Cornus): small trees, some of whose fruits can also be cooked into jam or jelly
- Magnificent bell (Enkianthus campanulatus): flower is reminiscent of lily of the valley, beautiful autumn color, requires acidic soil
- Daphne: blooms very early in the year, fragrant - and poisonous!
- Witch hazel (witch hazel): blooms in winter, beautiful autumn color
- Laurel rose (Kalmia): evergreen heather plant, flowers are similar to those of the rhododendron
- Ranunculus bush (Kerria japonica): very robust, choose an unfilled variety for shade
- Kolkwizia: approx. two to three meters high, very flowery
- Snowball (Viburnum): not all varieties are shade tolerant, so pay attention to the label!
- Pipe bush (Philadelphus coronarius): the yellow-leaved forms are particularly beautiful in the shade
- Barberry (Berberis): mostly evergreen varieties, beautiful yellow flowers
Tip
To brighten up a shady corner in the garden, you should, if possible, plant shrubs and perennials with bright flowers and colorful (i.e. yellow or variegated) foliage.
