The Dieffenbachia is one of the most popular houseplants due to its robustness. Because it is strong and grows quite quickly, it needs to be given a larger flower pot regularly, sometimes even every year. We have summarized for you below how to properly repot plants that are in soil and those in hydroculture.

How do I properly repot a Dieffenbachia?

To repot a Dieffenbachia, choose a larger container, fill in fresh substrate (for hydroponics: expanded clay, for conventional care: potting soil or self-mixed substrate) and place the plant carefully. Remove damaged root parts, water well and ensure there is sufficient water drainage. Wear gloves when repotting.

The right time

As with many houseplants, spring is the ideal time for repotting the Dieffenbachia.

Which substrate is suitable?

With hydroponics one thing is clear: you have to get enough fresh expanded clay and a larger culture pot.

For conventionally cared for dieffenbachias you can:

  • conventional potting soil (€17.00 at Amazon)
  • substrate made from leaf mold, expanded clay or perlite and sand yourself

use.

The new flower pot should be one, or better two, sizes larger than the previous one.

Procedure for hydroponics

Here you have to pay particular attention that the unprotected roots are not injured.

  • Pour a few centimeters of expanded clay into the new, larger container.
  • Carefully lift the plant out of the pot. If many roots have grown through the slits, cut open the container or smash it
  • Substrate that is surrounded by the roots does not need to be shaken off.
  • Rotten root parts, which can be recognized by their soft consistency, cut off.
  • Fill with expanded clay, making sure that the Dieffenbachia stands straight.
  • Put the pot on the pot a few times so that the granules slip into all the gaps and refill if necessary.
  • Water well.

Put Dieffenbachia in fresh substrate

Make sure that the new planter has good water drainage, as the Dieffenbachia is very sensitive to waterlogging. First cover it with a piece of clay and then fill in a few centimeters of soil. Following:

  • Lift Dieffenbachia out of the old container.
  • If this does not work, the pot must be cut open or broken.
  • Cut off damaged root parts and carefully remove used substrate.
  • Place Dieffenbachia in the new flower pot and fill with soil.
  • Press carefully.
  • Water well so that the fine spaces between the roots fill with soil.
  • Tip excess water into the saucer.

Tip

Dieffenbachia is poisonous in all parts of the plant. Therefore, wear gloves when repotting and all care measures.
