When it comes to care, cacti rarely require horticultural attention. Incorrect overwintering, on the other hand, is punished with a consistent refusal to bloom. To ensure that your prickly roommates actually produce their buds in winter, there are important conditions to consider. This guide explains how to do it correctly.
What is the best way to overwinter cacti in winter?
In order to overwinter cacti successfully, they should be placed in a cool and bright place at 5-12 degrees Celsius from November to February and watered only rarely. In summer, regular fertilization and adjusted watering help to optimally prepare the plants for the winter phase.
This is how cacti survive the tricky winter period
A winter rest period of 3 to 4 months is essential for cacti to bloom next year. The succulents are prepared for a cool, dry season to follow a hot summer. By simulating the natural conditions as precisely as possible, you support this exotic vegetation cycle. This is how it works:
- From September, gradually reduce the amount of irrigation water
- Do not water from November to February or only water sips every few weeks
- During this time, place in a bright and cool place with temperatures between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius
It is important to note that no freshly watered cactus moves to a cool winter quarters. Under the influence of low temperatures, the substrate no longer dries out, so that rot occurs and the plant dies. The cooler the winter location, the less light is required. At 7 degrees Celsius, a bright window in the basement is enough for cacti to overwinter undamaged.
Balanced nutrient supply strengthens resistance
During the almost dry winter, cacti use up to two thirds of their water and nutrient reserves. Regular fertilization in summer helps ensure that they survive this strain in one piece. If you add liquid cactus fertilizer (€7.00 on Amazon) to the water every second watering from May to September, the plants will go into the cold season well prepared.
Tip
Permanent wetness due to rain and snowfall is a problem for hardy cacti in the bed. So that these species can demonstrate their frost hardiness, they should be equipped with a rain cover. Even a simple frame made of wooden stakes and translucent greenhouse film is enough to successfully overwinter the exotic outdoor cacti.
