Is phlox hardy and how do you care for it in winter?
Perennial phlox is hardy down to around -20°C and requires sufficient water in winter, less fertilizer and, if necessary, protection from the cold in extreme frost. Sun-sensitive varieties should be protected from strong sunlight even in winter.
Among the perennial Phlox varieties you will find almost all growth forms from low ground cover to tall perennials. The flowering times also vary so much that you can look forward to numerous flowering plants from spring to autumn. All you have to do is select the seeds or young plants specifically.
By cutting back some shoots before flowering, you can also extend the flowering time of the individual plants. Cut off everything that has faded immediately, then many varieties of Phlox will even bloom a second time.
How to care for phlox in winter?
Like all hardy plants, phlox also needs sufficient water in winter. As long as the ground is not frozen, you should water your phlox, although slightly less than in the warm season. A layer of mulch also prevents your phlox from drying out. However, you can do without fertilizer. Your Phlox only needs this during the growth phase.
Some Phlox varieties are sensitive to the blazing sun. You also need sun protection in winter. If you have planted your phlox in partial shade, keep in mind that the foliage of the sun-protecting trees will not be there in winter.
Your Phlox generally does not need protection from the cold. However, a layer of leaves or brushwood protects it from extreme frost or a very long period of frost. The roots of potted plants are more likely to suffer from frost than plants in flower beds.
