Propagate fiddle figs does not place great demands on the hobby gardener. You can grow the popular houseplant from seeds or grow new offshoots from cuttings. Propagating the fiddle leaf fig by removing moss is a little more complicated.
How can I propagate a fiddle leaf fig?
A fiddlehead fig can be propagated by top cuttings, moss or sowing. Cuttings are cut in spring, while moss requires a strong shoot and takes four weeks. Sowing requires planting seeds in moist seed trays.
Three methods for propagating fiddle leaf fig
To propagate a fiddle leaf fig, you have three options to choose from:
- Head cuttings
- Moosen
- Sowing
The most complex method is moss removal, for which you need some experience. It is only done when the violin fig has become too big overall.
Pulling offshoots from cuttings
To do this, cut top cuttings from soft shoots in spring. Woody shoots are not suitable for this. Milky juice runs out when cutting. Immerse the interface in lukewarm water for a short time to stop the juice from escaping.
Let the interface dry a little before putting the cuttings into prepared cultivation pots. Cover them with cling film and ventilate them once a day. This will prevent mold from forming.
Place the cuttings in a protected, warm location where temperatures are between 25 and 30 degrees.
Propagate fiddle figs by mossing
To remove moss, you need a strong shoot that is slightly woody and not too thin. Cut it diagonally upwards to the middle. Gently bend the shoot to create a small gap. Put a small stone in here to keep it open.
Cover the interface with sphagnum moss, which you moisten beforehand. Then wrap cling film around it.
It takes about four weeks for roots to form. Now you can separate the offshoot and put it in a pot.
Propagation by sowing
Do not sow the seed too densely in a seed tray and cover it lightly with soil. Keep the soil moist and keep the bowl warm.
Pricking out after emergence. Once the small fiddle leaf figs are large enough, transplant them into small pots.
Tip
Fiddleleaf figs are relatively easy to care for. The most important thing is that the humidity is sufficiently high and the surface is not too cold. Otherwise the houseplant will lose its leaves.
