The cup primrose is one of the ornamental plants that you can also plant in the garden bed in summer. However, the cup primrose is not hardy and must be kept frost-free over the winter. That's why it's better to care for the plant as a houseplant. Care tips.
How do I best care for a cup primrose?
For optimal care of a cup primrose, the substrate should always be kept moist, waterlogging should be avoided and watered with lime-free water. Fertilize before and during flowering, repot in spring and cut off spent flowers. Make sure you have a bright, cool location and overwinter the non-hardy plant frost-free.
How is the primrose properly watered?
- Keep substrate constantly moist
- water less in winter
- use lime-free, room temperature water
- Avoid waterlogging
- spray with water during the flowering period
When and how often do you fertilize a cup primrose?
The cup primrose is only fertilized before and during the flowering period. As soon as the first leaves sprout, add a phosphorus-based fertilizer (€17.00 on Amazon) to the watering water. But reduce the dosage by half. Once the plant has finished flowering, you should no longer fertilize it.
If you have repotted the cup primrose in spring, you must not fertilize it additionally in the first few months.
When does the cup primrose need to be repotted?
The plant is best repotted in spring after the end of the winter break. The new pot should not be much larger than the previous one. Shake off the old substrate well when unpotting the cup primrose.
The new pot needs a sufficiently large drainage hole. Drainage made of gravel at the bottom of the pot prevents waterlogging.
Do not plant the plant deeper than it was before.
Does the cup primrose need to be cut?
Cutting is not necessary. However, you should cut off spent inflorescences to stimulate the development of new flowers. Dried leaves are carefully plucked out.
What diseases and pests can occur?
If the primrose has yellow leaves, the irrigation water was too calcareous. Rot occurs due to waterlogging.
Pests almost never appear.
How do you properly overwinter a cup primrose?
Cup primroses are not hardy and must be overwintered frost-free. Place them in a bright place where the temperatures are ideally between 10 and 15 degrees. The location should be ventilated once a day.
In winter, the cup primrose is only watered sparingly. However, the substrate must not dry out completely.
Tip
The cup primrose likes it bright but cool even during the flowering period. Therefore, look for a place in the house where it doesn't get too warm. Otherwise the ornamental plant will wither very quickly.
