Frangipani or Plumeria is a plant native to tropical regions. It therefore cannot tolerate any frost temperatures. It can't even cope with low plus temperatures. How do you properly overwinter a frangipani?

How should you overwinter a frangipani in winter?

In order to properly overwinter a frangipani, you should place it in a cool, bright and frost-free place. Water sparingly in winter quarters, almost not at all from November onwards, and do not fertilize. Start watering and fertilizing slowly again in spring.

Winter frangipani cool and bright

Frangipani does not tolerate temperatures below 15 degrees. You therefore have to bring it into the house in good time to overwinter it properly.

  • Set up cool but frost-free
  • bright location
  • water a little at first, then don’t water at all
  • do not fertilize
  • water and fertilize slowly again from spring

Bright entrance areas, cool winter gardens and greenhouses are suitable locations in winter. The humidity should not be too low to avoid pest infestation.

Frangipani needs a rest

So that the frangipani can gather strength to form new flowers, it needs a long rest. It lasts between four and six months. You can tell that the plant needs rest because it sheds almost all of its leaves.

Water the frangipani significantly less from the end of October. From the end of November you should only give some water when the plumeria trunk is already completely wrinkled. From March onwards, slowly start watering the houseplant again.

You are not allowed to fertilize a frangipani at all in winter. He receives the last fertilizer when flowering begins in summer. From March onwards, give the plumeria some fertilizer again - but only if you have not repotted the plant beforehand. It is enough if you fertilize the frangipani at intervals of two weeks.

Tip

When you take the frangipani out of its winter quarters, first place it in the shade to get it used to the bright sun outdoors. Otherwise the leaves will burn due to sunlight.
