Is your hedge trimmer broken or no longer working properly? You can't repair everything yourself, but you can at least rule out some errors. Below you will find out when you can do it yourself and when you should have your hedge trimmer repaired.
How can I repair my hedge trimmer myself?
To repair a broken hedge trimmer yourself, you can remove dirt and rust, tighten loose screws and sharpen dull blades. However, if you have electronic defects or engine problems, you should consult a specialist.
What's wrong with the hedge trimmer?
Hedge trimmers can have a variety of faults. The most common are:
- The hedge trimmer makes louder noises than normal when cutting.
- The cutting blades move slower than usual.
- The knife blades don't move at all.
- The hedge trimmer does not cut, but moves the blades.
When can you repair the hedge trimmer yourself?
You cannot fix electronic defects or problems with the engine yourself, unless you are an electrician or engine technology specialist. However, in most cases you cannot easily know whether the cause of the damage is the engine or the electronics. So what can you do?
You can rule out that the problem is caused by dirt or rust. You can also locate and repair loose screws and blunt knives yourself. So proceed as follows.
Repair the hedge trimmer yourself
- Screwdriver
- Old rag
- Metal brush
- Resin cleaner
- Oil
- Gear grease
1. For your safety
Remove all power supplies to prevent the hedge trimmer from turning on when repairing. Put on gloves to protect yourself from injury.
2. Screw on
Turn the hedge trimmer over, remove the screws from the gearbox cover and take it off. Remove all other unscrewed individual parts and loosen the fastening screws of the knife blades. Here we explain in detail how to disassemble your hedge trimmer.
3. Fix problems
Is the hedge trimmer very dirty? Remove coarse dirt such as leaves and branches from both the inside of the housing and the knife blades with the metal brush.
Then clean all the corners you can reach with a resin-dissolving agent (€22.00 on Amazon) and/or a little oil on a dry cloth.
4. Oiling
Oil all metal parts of your hedge trimmer, including screws. You can find out how to do this here.
The hedge trimmer doesn't cut
If the blades move but the hedge trimmer still doesn't cut, then it is probably blunt. In this guide we will explain to you how to sharpen your hedge trimmer yourself.
