How to adjust the carburetor of a lawnmower?
To adjust a lawn mower carburetor, you should clean the engine, clean the air filter, check the fuel supply and bring the engine to operating temperature. Then adjust the engine speed and the fuel-air mixture using the adjustment screws on the carburetor until a smooth idle is achieved.
Preparation work guarantees the best possible carburetor adjustment
If you are aiming for a perfect setting for the carburettor, we recommend the following preparation measures. You will achieve the best possible result if all important components are clean and common. Before you turn your attention to the adjustment screws, proceed as follows:
- Remove the air filter and blow it out or wash it
- Pull the spark plug connector, unscrew the spark plug and clean all contacts
- Check the starter flap for free movement and remove any contamination if necessary
Last but not least, open the fuel valve, which is located at the bottom of the gas tank on most lawn mower models. Remove the pipe to check for blockages and clear them if necessary.
Adjustment instructions – How to adjust the carburettor correctly
Once you have cleaned your lawn mower, check the petrol and oil levels, as the engine must be idling to adjust the carburettor. If necessary, please refill petrol and oil. As a rule, lawn mowers have 2 adjustment screws on the carburettor: for the engine speed and the fuel-air mixture. The only tool you need is a screwdriver. How to adjust the carburettor correctly:
- Place the lawnmower on a flat surface and start
- Let the engine run for about 5 minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature
- Turn in the engine speed screw so that the revolutions increase (engine becomes louder)
- Adjust the fuel mixture screw so that the engine runs smoothly
The increased engine speed makes it easier to adjust the fuel supply and should be reversed afterwards. In the last step of the adjustment, unscrew this adjusting screw until a smooth idle occurs. Tip
If a lawn mower consistently refuses to start, it's not always the carburetor's fault. Dirty spark plugs and air filters often prevent a smooth start, as does a lack of gasoline or a blade bar blocked by wet grass.
