Unfortunately, cut flowers fade quite quickly and the garden's floral splendor is also limited. However, some flowers are so pretty that the desire to preserve them arises. You can find out how this works in this article.
How can you preserve and preserve flowers?
Flowers can be preserved by drying them in glycerin, placing them in dry s alt or silica gel beads and preserving them with wax. These methods preserve the colors and textures of the flowers so they can be enjoyed for longer.
When should drying start?
Flowers should always be dried before they begin to wilt. Enjoy the fresh flowers for a few days, but don't wait too long to start preserving them.
Drying in glycerin
You can place individual flowers in a mixture of two parts water and one part glycerin or place them in the liquid.
The flowers absorb the water and the glycerin ensures that they dry at the same time. With this type of preservation, the colors are well preserved.
Soaking in dry s alt or silica gel beads
Preserving flowers is very convenient with these special drying materials.
For this method you need:
- Drying s alt or silica gel beads
- A tightly sealing vessel. If you only want to dry one flower, a jam jar is ideal.
- Pour a layer of s alt or gel about two centimeters thick into the container.
- Put the flower in it and fill with drying material.
- You should do this very carefully so that the delicate petals are not damaged.
- Seal tightly.
- After about three days, the drying process is complete and you can carefully remove the plant.
Preserving flowers with wax
This method is extremely popular with florists and hobby gardeners because the wax coating gives the flowers their very own charm. In addition to an old pot, you will need dipping wax from craft supplies or alternatively leftover candles.
- Melt the wax in a water bath.
- Always monitor the temperature. This should not exceed sixty degrees.
- Hold the flower by the stem and immerse it.
- Stand up briefly and shape the petals with a needle.
- Hang upside down and let dry.
Tip
When preserving, please note that different flowers have different drying times. Small flowers with fine petals are dried very quickly while large flowers or thick buds require a relatively long time to preserve.
