Wouldn't it be nice to preserve the colorful colors of flowers and, for example, to enjoy them again and again? Unfortunately, the shelf life of fresh flowers is very limited. In the vase they usually start to wilt within a week. However, there are various ways to preserve flowers so that they do not lose any of their beauty.
How to preserve flowers effectively?
Flowers can be preserved by various methods such as glycerin treatment, dry s alting, air drying, wax coating or oven drying or dehydrator. These methods preserve the color and shape of the flowers for a longer shelf life.
Glycerin
Glycerin is able to bind liquids. If you place flowers in a mixture of this sugar alcohol and water, entire bouquets can be dried easily:
- Mix water and glycerin (€14.00 on Amazon) in a ratio of two to one.
- Cut the flowers freshly so that the plants can absorb the liquid well.
- Remove leaves that would protrude into the substance.
- The drying is complete as soon as no more droplets come out of the flowers.
You can also dry individual flower heads with glycerin. Simply place the flowers in the solution for a few days until they are preserved.
Dry s alt
Dry s alt preserves the colors of the flowers particularly beautifully. However, the absorption capacity of the s alts is limited. The plants that you want to preserve in this way must not be too moist.
- Pour dry s alt into a sufficiently large container.
- Put flowers in it and fill with s alt.
- Seal tightly and place in a warm place for at least two weeks.
Air drying
This is the classic method that works very well, especially with solid flowers. It is suitable for a whole bouquet as well as for a single flower that reminds you of a special event.
- Tie the bouquet tightly. A hanging ribbon is knotted on individual flowers.
- Hang the flowers upside down in an airy, dark place.
- If the plants rustle when touched, they are completely dry and can be removed.
- Finally spray with clear varnish.
Preserving flowers with wax
You can give flowers an unusual color and preserve them at the same time by covering them with wax. This method is particularly suitable for individual flowers, which then serve as attractive room decorations.
- Melt leftover candle or craft wax in a water bath.
- The temperature should not rise above 60 degrees. Check with a thermometer!
- Dip flowers upside down into the wax.
- Put on newspaper or in a vase to dry.
Tip
You can preserve individual flowers in the oven or a dehydrator. Place them on the rack and dry the flowers at the lowest setting for several hours until they feel completely dry.
