Spring is considered the traditional planting time for perennials, although for most plants of this genus autumn is the better season for growing. However, there are some perennials that you should (only) plant in spring. This post will tell you all the essential details about planting perennials in spring.
When and how to plant perennials in spring?
In spring, frost-sensitive perennials, such as certain types of lilies, should be planted between March and May. Ensure adequate watering, appropriate location, recommended planting spacing and avoiding root contact with air during the planting process.
These perennials are suitable for spring planting
First of all, it should be noted that the majority of perennials are hardy and should generally be planted in autumn. However, there are also several types of perennials that not only prefer to be planted in spring, but absolutely need it to thrive. Here we are primarily referring to frost-sensitive perennials, which include certain types of lilies.
Such perennials generally have a much better start in life if they are not confronted with icy cold in the first few weeks and months. The roots of these plants are often not strong enough to survive the winter unscathed. We therefore explicitly advise you to always plant frost-sensitive perennials in spring and never in autumn.
Note: In autumn, the last sensible date is mid-October. If you miss this moment with your hardy perennials, you should postpone planting until spring entirely.
When exactly should you plant perennials in spring?
The optimal time for spring planting of perennials is March, April and May.
Note: Spring is also the perfect time for transplanting perennials. Give your plants their new location between the end of March and the beginning of May.
What you need to consider when planting perennials in spring
It's not too difficult to plant perennials. You don't need any experience to complete this task. However, there are a few points to take into account. We have briefly summarized the most important details for you here:
- In spring there are sometimes long dry periods. Be sure to water your newly planted perennials adequately during these times!
- Every perennial has certain demands on the location (sun versus partial shade or shade, soil conditions, place protected from the wind, etc.). Fulfill her this!
- Base on the recommended planting distances in the bed if you want to plant several perennials.
- It is important to leave the perennials without soil for as short as possible when planting or transplanting.
