The lilac (lat. Syringa) is one of the classics in the garden: the shrub or tree with its distinctively fragrant, purple or white flowers catches the eye, especially when it is in bloom. So that you can enjoy this splendor, you should plant the plant in a location that is as sunny as possible.
Where should you plant lilacs?
The best location for lilacs (Syringa) is a full sun, airy spot with at least four hours of direct sunlight daily. The soil should be calcareous, loose, well-drained and moderately nutrient-rich, except for Preston lilac, which prefers low-lime soil.
The sunnier, the better
Originally, the original form of the species Syringa vulgaris, which is often cultivated in gardens, comes from southeastern Europe and was introduced from there to Austria in the 16th century. From here the tree spread very quickly and quickly gained popularity. As usual from its original home, lilac needs a lot of sun and therefore prefers a location in full sun. Since the plant is also quite insensitive to wind, it can also be very airy - lilac hedges make a wonderful windbreak.
Does lilacs thrive in partial shade?
Some varieties also do well in light partial shade, as long as they are in direct sun for more than four hours a day. You quickly notice when it is too dark for the lilac: then it grows rather poorly, often has yellow leaves and also produces few or even no flowers at all - but in many cases even more foliage. A completely shady location, however, is completely unsuitable for the flowering tree.
The right floor
The soil is just as important as the brightness when choosing a location: with the exception of the Canadian or Preston lilac, the tree requires a calcareous soil with loose, well-drained and moderately nutrient-rich soil. For Preston lilacs, however, it is better to choose a low-lime, rather nutrient-rich soil or improve your garden soil accordingly.
Tip
Never plant lilac bushes close to buildings or other trees. You should also install a root barrier (€49.00 on Amazon) if possible, because lilac roots spread quickly and over a large area.
