The most beautiful balcony plants shiver at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Don't let the first warm rays of sunshine in spring tempt you to plant your balcony prematurely. This short guide has the answer to when you can safely plant petunias, geraniums and other summer beauties.
When can you plant balcony plants?
Delicate balcony plants such as petunias and geraniums should only be planted after the Ice Saints, i.e. after May 15th, to avoid late frosts. In harsh winter regions, planting after the sheep's cold at the beginning of June is recommended.
Cold Sophie gives the starting signal – plant after the Ice Saints
The Central European spring brings with it a climate phenomenon that poses a danger to sensitive balcony plants. Late frosts strike overnight without warning and cause the first buds and flowers to freeze. This capricious weather found expression in ancient times in an old farmer's rule that is still valid today for choosing the right planting date:
- Plant sensitive balcony plants only after the Ice Saints
- Wait until May 15th when Cold Sophie says goodbye as the last ice saint
In regions with harsh winters, we recommend planting cold-sensitive flowers only after the cold weather at the beginning of June. In some years, cold air flows in from the northwest, causing the thermometer to drop by up to 10 degrees within a few hours.
