With its splendid colors and delicate scent, the auricle (bot. Primula auricula) is an enrichment for every garden or balcony box. This primrose plant, which blooms in numerous colors, is also very demanding, easy to care for and easy to propagate.
How to propagate auricles?
Auricles can be propagated by daughter plants, division or sowing. Daughter plants and division enable varietal propagation, while sowing is not varietal. Propagation is ideal in spring or after flowering.
The propagation of auricles is possible in various ways, namely through daughter plants or division and through sowing. Removing and planting the daughter plants can be done in just a few minutes, but you need a little patience to sow them.
Reproduction through daughter plants
The auricle independently forms secondary rosettes, these are varietal daughter plants. They arise either at the roots or in the leaf axils. By separating these daughter plants, you will get auricles that are identical to the mother plant, i.e. plants that grow in the same shape and bloom in the same color.
The division of the Primula auricula
The best time to divide your auricles is early spring (February to March) or after flowering (September to October). Take your time and dig up the plants to be divided. Rinse the roots with water and see where the best place to cut the roots is.
The partial plants are planted just like the daughter plants. Choose a sunny location, but in the shade during midday, with loose, well-drained soil. A rock garden is also well suited.
