If you want to create a perennial bed, you should invest some time in planning it. After all, the perennials come back every year, saving you a lot of work. This makes it all the more important to have a precise plan. Below you will find a few ideas for the ideal planting plan for your perennial bed.
What should a perennial bed planting plan look like?
An ideal planting plan for a perennial bed includes: large perennials (1.50 - 2 m) in the middle, medium-sized perennials (1 - 1.50 m) in the second zone, small perennials (up to 1 m) in the third zone and ground cover on the edge. This creates a harmonious and varied bed.
The size of the perennials is crucial for the planting plan
Especially in larger perennial beds, it is important to arrange the plants according to size. Depending on the size, you can divide your perennial bed into two, three, four or even more zones:
- In the middle or in the back area (if the bed can only be seen from one side) there are tall perennials (1.50 to 2m)
- medium-sized perennials are planted around it (1m to 1.50m)
- smaller perennials are planted further towards the edge (0.50 to 1m)
- and the edge is decorated with ground cover
Large perennials for the center
The center should be dominated by strong, clearly visible large perennials. Perennials with a height of 1.50 to 2m are ideal. These include:
- Marshmallow
- True Angelica
- Garden Mountain Knotweed

- Giant leek
- larkspur
- Bulbs
- Asteraster
- perennial sunflower
- Perennial vetch

Medium-sized perennials for the second zone
The large perennials are surrounded by slightly smaller ones. With a height of 1 to 1.50m, the following are suitable:

Ground cover at the end
Ground cover plants are right at the edge. If you want little work, you can also use ground cover over a wider area or even for the entire bed planting. Since the plants spread over the ground, fewer plants are necessary per square meter. They also keep weeds away. The most beautiful ground cover perennials include:
- Andean Cushions
- Sandon-forming Waldsteinia
- Blue pillow
- Leadwort
- Fat Man
- Evergreen
- Pillow soapwort
