Barberry species are nicknamed organic barbed wire thanks to their fearsome thorns. The most defensive varieties even have sharp spines along the edges of the leaves. The question therefore arises as to whether the thorns are poisonous. This guide not only has a well-founded answer. Practical tips reveal how to act correctly if there is a thorn in your finger.
Are barberry thorns poisonous?
Barberry thorns are not poisonous, but the plant contains toxic isoquinoline alkaloids, particularly berberine. The highest concentration is in roots and stem bark, while thorns, leaves and flowers contain smaller amounts. However, the berries and seeds are harmless and edible.
All parts of barberry are poisonous - with one exception
Poisonous plants are not to be trifled with. We therefore asked experts about the toxic content of barberry thorns. The information center against poisoning at the University of Bonn states:
- Barberries are poisonous in all parts due to alkaloids
- Main components with he alth risks: Isoquinoline alkaloids with berberine as the main alkaloid
- Highest concentration in roots and trunk bark
- Lower concentration in leaves, flowers and thorns
- Harmless plant parts: berries and the seeds they contain
From these findings it follows that barberry berries are suitable for consumption. The fruits contain valuable vitamins and fiber. In autumn you can harvest the dark red berries and use them for a variety of preparations.
Removing barberry thorns from your finger - this is how it works
If home gardeners devote themselves to maintenance work without appropriate protective clothing, a thorn can sometimes get stuck in their finger. This is no reason to panic, but should not be taken lightly. How to get rid of the thorn:
- Clean the affected skin area carefully with warm, soapy water
- Important: Do not press or squeeze the entry point
- Use a magnifying glass to examine how deep the thorn is in the meat
- Ideally pull it out with tweezers (€11.00 on Amazon)
- Alternatively, apply adhesive tape, press lightly and remove with the mandrel
- Apply deeper thorn with traction ointment overnight and remove the next day
If you only discover the thorn when the skin is already swollen, please contact your family doctor immediately. Swelling indicates inflammation, which can result in blood poisoning if not treated correctly.
Tip
Do you know the difference between spines and thorns? Spines sit superficially on a plant's epidermis, so they can easily break off and get stuck in your finger. Thorns, on the other hand, are firmly attached to the shoot because they are former leaves. Since barberry thorns do not break off easily, they can cause significant skin injuries, so wearing protective clothing when cutting is strongly recommended.
