A bed border, as the name suggests, is intended to enclose beds and set boundaries, but also to underline the style of the garden. It can be designed in different ways, straight or curved, made of solid materials or plants.
How do I design a flower bed border differently?
Unusual bed borders can be braided yourself, made from culinary herbs, carrots or individual palisades made from branches or railway sleepers. These variants give the garden an individual charm and underline its character.
In the interests of a harmonious design, you should always keep the style of your garden in mind when choosing bed borders. Concrete borders are less suitable for a cottage garden; wicker fences or wooden borders underline the character of a natural garden much better. Noble material such as granite, on the other hand, fits very well into an appropriately designed rose garden.
Traditional flower bed borders
Boxwood is certainly not an insider tip for a bed border. Since it can be easily cut into almost any shape imaginable, you can also use it to create an unusual border. However, this requires creativity and a practiced use of secateurs.
You can also let your imagination run wild with a wooden bed border and make it unusual. For example, you can use old railway sleepers or thick branches from your garden.
Saw these into pieces of different lengths. Then drive the pieces deep enough into the ground so that they remain stable. The upper edge can be irregular, which gives your bed border a special charm.
Braided flower bed borders
You can buy wattled fences in various designs at hardware stores (€19.00 at Amazon) or garden retailers. If you have a hazelnut bush or a willow tree in your garden, you can also weave such a border yourself. This means you can adjust the height perfectly to your needs and design the arches you want to fit exactly.
You can use the annual clippings from your pasture or hazel bush for such braids. If you need more branches for your border, that's no problem either. These bushes can tolerate a radical pruning and then sprout again. The thicker branches are suitable for the stakes that you want to weave around. Stick them deep enough into the ground; after all, they should give the fence stability. For braiding, use young, flexible shoots of different lengths and thicknesses.
Edible borders
If you would like to design your bed border with plants that can be used for culinary purposes, you can use herbs, for example. The selection is huge. You can easily create a fragrant hedge with lemon balm, rosemary, sage or thyme, but chives are also suitable for bordering beds. The use of carrots with their delicate herb is quite unusual but very decorative.
