An artificial stream always consists of three components: source, path and destination. The path is the stream in the actual sense, while the source and destination each mark its end points.

How do you make the source of an artificial stream attractive?

A stream spring can be made attractive by integrating the end of the return hose of the stream pump into a spring stone, a spring bowl or similar from which the water bubbles up. Self-drilled holes in pieces of stone are another option.

No stream without a stream pump

Since the artificial stream is a never-ending cycle whose water flows from the source to the destination and is transported back from there, the indispensable stream pump is the actual source. There are different models to choose from, which you choose depending on size, water flow and needs:

  • Submersible pumps: can be stored in a collecting basin or pond and are protected from frost in winter if the water depth is sufficient. Disadvantage: Not suitable or only suitable to a limited extent for fish ponds.
  • Stream pump with filter: Particularly suitable for streams with integrated fish ponds. Guarantee consistently high water quality.
  • Stream pump without filter: if there are no fish swimming in the pond or there is no pond
  • Solar-powered stream pump (€199.00 at Amazon): saves electricity

The pump is always installed at the lowest point at the end of the stream because its job is to pump the water back to the source. Submerge the pump either in the pond or in an earthen well below the water surface. The water itself flows back through a hose that is buried at the side of the stream. Never attach the return hose directly under the stream bed: If this needs to be repaired, the entire stream can otherwise be dug up.

Make the stream source attractive

Although the stream is fed from the return hose, it can still be designed to be visually appealing - in such a way that the hose is not noticeable. To do this, you can integrate its end into a spring stone, a spring bowl or similar, from which the water then bubbles up. By the way, you can easily make such a source stone yourself: all you need is a piece of stone in the desired shape and size, through which you drill a hole of a size that matches the diameter of the hose using a suitable tool.

Tip

You can do without a pump and therefore a spring if you have a dry stream - i.e. H. without any water – create. Made of natural stones and appropriately planted, this “little stream” also has a very atmospheric effect.
