Bed borders create a visually appealing demarcation between green areas and flower beds. At the same time, they make maintenance noticeably easier because the grass no longer grows uncontrollably into the bed. Laying a bed border yourself is not difficult with our instructions and can be easily done even by inexperienced people.
How can you lay a bed border yourself?
To lay a bed border, first stretch a batter board, dig a trench, add a drainage layer of grit or sand and insert the stones. Compact the subsoil and fill the gaps with excavated material.
Laying lawn edge stones
Whether square granite stones or brick: a stone bed border fits wonderfully into the overall look of the garden and is weather-resistant. Proceed as follows:
- Stretch a batter board to mark the path of the lawn edge.
- Dig a small trench. This should be so deep that the stone will later protrude about 5 centimeters from the ground and an approximately 5 centimeter thick drainage layer will fit into the pit.
- Put in grit or sand and compact.
- Insert the stones and tap them into place with a rubber mallet.
- Check the course with the spirit level.
- Pour the excavated material into the gaps in front of and behind the edge and also compact it.
The stones should now sit firmly and no longer wobble. If the soil is very sandy, it is recommended to place it in a bed of mortar.
Limit curved beds
These beds visually loosen up the garden and are therefore extremely popular. You can also easily add a bed border to these yourself. Stones with rounded heads that fit well into the round bed shape are particularly suitable here. Alternatively, you can divide larger stones to follow the path of the bed.
Since a batter board is unsuitable as a marker in this case, sprinkle sand or chalk on the ground along the desired shape and dig the trench. Proceed as described for the straight bed border.
Laying lawn edge stones in ascending order
The terraced design of the bed border is recommended on sloped properties. For this purpose, use stones of different heights that, when placed one behind the other, create small steps. In this way, you can combat soil erosion with simple means.
So that the bed border has enough stability, the stones need a stable foundation. They should therefore always be concreted. It also looks very nice if you make this concrete bed border entirely yourself.
Tip
Use a special paving hammer for laying (€32.00 on Amazon). Despite their heavy weight, this does not damage the stones and ensures that the stones are firmly seated in the subsurface.
