Did you know that you can increase the growth of your sequoia tree by applying appropriate fertilizer? Here you will receive valuable tips on which products are best to use and when is the recommended time to enrich the substrate.
How and when should you fertilize a sequoia tree?
Sequoia trees should be fertilized in spring from the second year onwards to promote their growth. Suitable fertilizers are compost, horn shavings and organic-mineral fertilizers. When kept in containers, additional fertilization after three months is recommended.
When should you fertilize?
At a height of one meter, your Sequoia is large enough to be placed outdoors. First of all, the earth is still rich in important minerals, so your sequoia tree can take care of itself. However, from the second year onwards you should add fertilizer, especially since the plant requires a comparatively high amount due to its rapid growth. Spring is suitable for this, as this is when your sequoia tree recovers from hibernation and forms new shoots. Young plants need a lot of fertilizer to optimally develop their root system. Once your Sequoia has developed into a sizeable tree, annual fertilization is still recommended, but is no longer so crucial for growth.
Appropriate means
There are various ways to fertilize your sequoia:
- Compost
- Horn shavings
- Organic-mineral fertilizer, for example for ornamental trees
Tip
It's best to use a slow-release fertilizer. Not only can you make your own compost inexpensively, the applied layer also protects against evaporation of the irrigation water. This saves you water costs and effort.
Be careful with mineral fertilizer
If you decide to use mineral fertilizer, sufficient watering is mandatory so that the substance is well distributed in the soil. Concentrations that are too high attack the roots of the sequoia tree.
Requirements for keeping containers
When kept in containers, the amount of substrate is limited, which is why the mineral deposits are lower. After fertilizing your Sequoia in the spring, you should repeat the process three months later.
