Although a weigela is quite easy to care for, it should not be left alone. Because of its enormous abundance of flowers, it needs quite a lot of nutrients. The supply of the right fertilizer in sufficient quantities is therefore not unimportant.
How and when should you fertilize a weigela?
A weigela requires fertilization in spring with 2-3 liters of well-ripened compost per plant for optimal growth and flowering. Potted plants are fertilized from April to July. Avoid over-fertilization to prevent horny shoots.
Fertilizing a weigela outdoors
It is best to fertilize your weigela outdoors in spring. In this way you stimulate the development of the buds that were already laid in autumn. Fertilization with well-ripened compost is ideal and cost-effective. About two to three liters per plant is completely sufficient.
Alternatively, it is possible to supply a liquid fertilizer (€18.00 on Amazon). It can be administered with the irrigation water and should contain sufficient potassium and nitrogen. You can mulch your weigela so that the moisture is retained well in the soil.
Fertilize the weigela properly in the pot
Grow your weigela in a bucket, then fertilize it continuously from April to July. It only needs no fertilizer in the first few months after planting or moving; the fresh soil contains enough nutrients for the time being. If flowering decreases despite a good supply of nutrients, then think about rejuvenating the root ball.
Can I over-fertilize a weigela?
Too much of a good thing not only harms people but also many plants. Therefore, you should not fertilize a weigela too much. This often leads to so-called horny shoots or water shoots on which no flowers form. At the same time, the flowering of the shoots that are actually suitable for this often decreases.
The most important things in brief:
- ideal: fresh, permeable and humus-rich soil
- fertilize sufficiently in poor soil
- Overfertilization can lead to horny shoots
- ideal fertilization: 2 to 3 liters of compost in spring
- Fertilize potted plants from April to July
- do not fertilize in winter
Tip
It is best to give your weigela outdoors two to three liters of well-ripened compost in the spring, then it will be well cared for through the flowering period.
