This is why hobby gardeners love the angel's trumpet - its magnificent, impressive flowers. It's all the more unfortunate if they don't want to show themselves. However, the lack of flowering usually has very simple causes and can be remedied with simple measures.
Why isn't my angel trumpet blooming?
If an angel's trumpet does not bloom, the causes are often a lack of water, a lack of nutrients or incorrect pruning. This can be remedied by regular watering, sufficient fertilization with long-term and flowering fertilizer as well as careful pruning that leaves flowering shoots intact.
The basic requirements for the coveted angel trumpet flower
First of all, it should be pointed out once again that the angel's trumpet has to use a lot of energy to produce its admirable, large flowers. So it's quite understandable that she avoids it in unfavorable circumstances.
High water requirement
Because of its large leaves, which evaporate a lot of water, it is also busy during the flowering season. The angel's trumpet needs a lot of water and doesn't like it when it is neglected in this regard.
High nutrient requirements
In addition, like all nightshades, it is a heavy feeder and is not only very thirsty, but also very hungry. So fertilizing is mandatory for her - and as regularly as possible. Because in container culture, which is necessary in this country, it can quickly become nutrient deficient. Regular repotting is therefore also a basic rule when cultivating angel trumpets.
In order to make the angel trumpet fit for the strenuous flowering, all of its basic needs should be in the green range:
- generous, consistent water supply
- sufficient and regular nutrient supply through fertilization
- as voluminous, rich substrate as possible
Possible reasons for the lack of flowers
These essential basic needs also result in the most common reasons for failure to bloom.
Reason 1: Lack of water
In fact, the angel's trumpet can go into flower trouble if it is watered too little or too irregularly. Especially on hot days, it's easy for her feet to get too dry. In this case, you simply have to water thoroughly every day until the water comes out at the bottom. And don't let it dry out again!
Reason 2: Nutrient deficiency
The most common cause of failure to bloom is certainly a lack of nutrients. The angel's trumpet should receive additional feed in the form of fertilization in at least two ways: Firstly, adding long-term fertilizer to the substrate is recommended. The best way to do this is to put the plant in a larger pot during wintering. It then needs to be supplied with acute fertilizer (€9.00 on Amazon) about 2 to 3 times a week. It is best to use a universal growth fertilizer first and then, from mid-June, when flowering should begin, a potassium-containing flowering fertilizer for potted plants.
If you have fertilized too little or too irregularly, you can achieve something by increasing fertilization, ideally with flowering fertilizer.
Reason 3: too much/incorrect pruning
What can also prevent flowering is pruning too intensively before or after the winter break - you must always make sure that you never remove all the shoots from the upper flowering region. If that has already happened, it is not yet evening: If you wait a while, the angel's trumpet will form new flowering shoots and give you a few more late flowers.
