How do I properly overwinter a Chinese elm?
To successfully overwinter a Chinese elm, place it in a bright, sunny location, provide sufficient water and ensure moderate temperatures of around 10°C. This way it keeps its leaves and stays protected from frost.
The Chinese elm likes it cold
The Chinese elm is a cold house plant. Whether it can tolerate light frost is controversial. Apparently there are differences depending on the origin of the respective variety. Bonsai trees from the Nordic hemisphere therefore cope better with cold. However, one thing is certain: you should not expose your Chinese elm to temperatures below zero long-term.
What does the term cold house plant mean?
Cold house plants must not be exposed to warm heating air. Moderate temperatures around 10°C are considered ideal. The advantage of overwintering this way is that the Chinese elm does not lose its leaves.
