Under the name Ginkgo you will find a tree species with the scientific name Ginkgo biloba. Different types of ginkgo are now grown all over the world; ginkgo originally comes from China. It is very easy to care for.
What types of Ginkgo trees are there and what care do they require?
There are different types of Ginkgo, including the classic Ginkgo biloba, “Pendula”, “Globus”, “Variegata” and “Tremonia”. Varieties that remain small are the troll ginkgo, dwarf ginkgo and Ginkgo biloba “Mariken”. All species require similar care, best in sunny locations and light loamy soil.
Do all types of ginkgo need the same care?
In principle, all ginkgo trees have the same needs. They thrive best in a sunny location, although the young tree tolerates partial shade somewhat better. Ginkgos place little demands on the soil; they even cope well with environmental toxins. The soil is ideally slightly clayey and not too dry.
A young ginkgo needs a little more care than an older tree. Give it enough water and regular fertilizer, as well as protection from frost, nothing more is necessary. After a few years your ginkgo will be robust and hardy.
Which types of ginkgo stay small?
The small varieties of ginkgo include the troll ginkgo and the dwarf ginkgo. Both are therefore well suited for planting in a pot, regardless of whether it is on the balcony or the ginkgo is used as a houseplant.
The Ginkgo biloba “Mariken” is only about one to one and a half meters tall and only grows about four to 15 centimeters per year. This tree is also one of the small varieties. It is very attractive with its spherical crown. Unlike other species, this ginkgo should not be cut into shape.
