How does potato water help against weeds?
Potato water is effective against weeds because its starch clogs plant pores and the hot water damages plant cells. Pour boiling hot potato, pasta or rice water directly over the weeds to effectively kill them.
How does potato water work?
The effectiveness is based on two properties:
- Potato water contains a lot of starch. This clogs the stomata (plant pores) so that the plants die.
- The cooking water is very hot and damages the plant cells.
You can also achieve the latter effect with boiling water. However, you have to boil this separately, while potato water is regularly produced as a waste product in the kitchen anyway.
How to use potato water?
Pour the hot water over the weeds immediately after cooking. Afterwards you just have to remove the dead plants.
Tip
Of course, not only hot potato water works, but also pasta or rice water, which also contains starch. If you pour it boiling hot over the weeds, weeds will be effectively destroyed.
