What diseases and pests can affect ginkgo trees?
The ginkgo tree is extremely robust and resistant to diseases and pests. Yellow leaves in summer can indicate supply problems. Young ginkgos are more sensitive to frost and direct sun, while older trees are very hardy.
However, you should protect a young ginkgo tree from predators. Snails, hares, rabbits and deer like the delicate leaves and shoots, but also the young bark of the tree. The roots are also eaten by mice. Feeding damage can lead to the death of a young ginkgo tree.
What harmful symptoms occur with ginkgo?
Before the ginkgo sheds its leaves in autumn, they turn bright yellow. But if he gets yellow leaves in the summer, then he is not completely satisfied with his supply. This could be due to soil that is too moist, lack of water or light, or incorrect fertilization.
Can a ginkgo freeze?
An older ginkgo is very hardy. It even survives temperatures of -25 °C quite well. Young, still soft shoots can occasionally freeze, but a full-grown ginkgo recovers from this rather small frost damage without any problems and fairly quickly.
It looks a little different with a young ginkgo. He is much more sensitive. Frost-free wintering is therefore recommended in the first few years. The easiest way to overwinter is to initially plant the ginkgo in a pot. So you can easily transport it.
Even a ginkgo in a pot, for example if it is outside on the terrace or balcony, is not really hardy. Here you should definitely protect the roots from the cold. If this freezes, the ginkgo can no longer be saved.
