The peach tree, Latin “Prunus perica”, originally comes from southern China and is therefore used to warmth and lots of sun. However, some peaches have been grown here for centuries, so these varieties are used to the German climate. Many new breeds are also very robust.
Can you grow a peach tree in Germany?
A peach tree can be grown in Germany if the location offers sufficient sun, a southern orientation and protection from wind and rain. Suitable robust varieties include Amsden, Benedicte, Revita, Foothill Peach, Suncrest and Early Alexander.
It depends on the location
In the wine-growing regions, especially on the Lower Moselle, it has been a tradition since the 16th century to grow the so-called vineyard peaches. But other types of peaches have also been thriving in German regions for a very long time. These include the Vorgebirge peach (also known as Roter Ellerstädter or Kernechter vom Vorgebirge) or the Anneliese Rudolph variety, which has now become quite rare. But the same applies to these peaches: the location matters.
The right location for a peach
Basically, you can also keep peaches in a container, which is particularly recommended for young trees due to their sensitivity. However, these trees (often shrubs) become very tall and grow very quickly, which is why planting them in the garden becomes necessary at some point. A peach feels particularly good in a place like this:
- lots of sun
- Location with a southern orientation if possible
- protected from wind and rain
- d. H. Space in front of a house or gable wall
- note the planting distance of 4.50 meters
Ensure the right soil quality
Peaches also need loose, humus-rich soil. Heavy, clayey and wet soils are not suitable. If your soil is not of the required quality, you can also dig a larger hole and fill it with appropriately mixed substrate. Another option is to graft a peach onto a plum rootstock. Since peaches have a high nutrient requirement, they need to be fertilized regularly - nitrogen is particularly important, but not too much. Excessive amounts can weaken the tree and result in disease.
Is the peach tree hardy?
This question cannot be answered in general terms, as sensitivity to frost varies from variety to variety. However, older peach trees in particular are quite insensitive and can be covered with fleece or burlap to protect them in very cold temperatures. Varieties suitable for cultivation in German climates are:
- Amsden
- Benedict
- Revita
- Footland Peach
- Suncrest
- Formerly Alexander
Some varieties can tolerate a harsher climate outside the wine-growing regions, but not all of them. The white-fleshed peaches in particular are quite robust.
Tips & Tricks
Try a dwarf peach like e.g. B. Cultivate Bonanza in a pot. This fits easily on the balcony and terrace.
