Nesting boxes for birds are commonplace, but not everyone has a bat nesting box in their own garden. These special dwellings are becoming more and more relevant. However, the prerequisite for usefulness is the correct choice of location.
Where should a bat nesting box be placed?
The optimal location for a bat nesting box is on a house wall or a tree in a location protected from the wind, without direct sun, with a clear flight path, the entry hole is not facing north and at least 3 meters high.
Suitable places
Bat nesting boxes are often hung in forests. But this is also quite conceivable in your own garden, for example
- on a house wall
- on a tree
Additional conditions
- wind-protected location
- not in the blazing sun
- do not point the entrance hole to the north
Keep flight path clear
Bats have very sensitive radar tracking. Nevertheless, bushes or trees that get in the way can cause irritation. The approach path must always be clear and should not be disturbed by people.
The height is crucial
When hanging your bat nesting box, maintain a minimum height of 3 meters. Many species drop from their sleeping quarters before flying away. In addition, the animals are safe from cats at this height. The higher you place the nesting box, the greater the species diversity of your guests.
