The juniper is a slow-growing tree that tolerates regular pruning well. In addition to the timing, you should pay attention to a few aspects so that the shrub does not look unsightly. There are different pruning techniques for which the juniper is suitable.
When and how should you prune juniper?
Cutting juniper is ideally done in spring or October. Depending on the growth form, different techniques can be used, such as maintenance pruning for hedges, topiary pruning for solitary trees or design pruning for bonsais. Pay attention to the correct cutting rhythm and the protection of the brood.
Before the cut
The cutting tool must be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with alcohol before use so that the juniper does not get any diseases. Use gloves as the sharp needles can quickly cause injuries. The slightly toxic plant sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive people.
The ideal time
Topiary cuts are possible throughout the entire growing season. Intensive pruning must be carried out outside the bird breeding season, otherwise there will be fines. Radical pruning during the breeding season can destroy nests. Even if you want to shape the tree, you should carry out the care outside of breeding activity. This starts on March 1st and ends on September 30th.
Cutting rhythm
Although the juniper is one of the slow-growing trees, it should be cut back annually. Choose an overcast and cool day in spring to prune the shrub. If you shorten the shrub before it sprouts, it can sprout well and form dense branches in the coming growing season. Pruning is also possible in October if the shrub has outgrown its shape over the summer.
Pruning of hedges
Hedges and bushes are cut in a trapezoidal shape so that the lower branches and leaves also get enough light. This shape is not only visually appealing, but also prevents baldness in the lower area. Remove dead branches and tighten cords so as not to lose sight of the desired shape.
Align your hedge trimmer (€24.00 on Amazon) parallel to the plant. Cut the juniper from tip to base along your guides. Corners are slightly rounded to increase the incidence of light.
Topiary cutting for solitary trees
Shrubs in individual positions are suitable for creating special growth forms. You can use a stencil to shape balls, spirals or animals out of your juniper. The corresponding shape can be made out of wire and placed over the plant. Before pruning, dead shoots are removed. All protruding branches are cut back, with each cut starting at a branch fork.
Design cut for bonsais
Junipers are popular in bonsai art because they allow for extravagant shapes. The cut is particularly important for this. The tree tolerates pruning well, but tolerates regular pruning better than radical pruning.
Tips for the right cut:
- Pinch off shoot tips regularly
- avoid radical pruning
- Pull off any protruding fibers with tweezers
- remove bare branches completely
Removing dead branches requires some preparation so that there are no gaps on the bonsai. Shoots must develop above and below the targeted branch to conceal the gap. Alternatively, a bare branch can be used for deadwood design.
