How do I cut a Eucalyptus Azura correctly?

To properly prune a Eucalyptus Azura, it is best to prune in spring. Remove crooked branches, shorten the sprouts to two to three buds and treat the cut sites with wound protection product.

Cultivation options

The eucalyptus is available either as a tree or as a shrub. If you see the Australian plant as an ornamental tree, it is probably a breeding product. Although the eucalyptus Azura is one of the small varieties, it can also reach a height of up to five meters. Regular pruning will prevent the tree from becoming too big for your garden.

Possible locations

If you keep the eucalyptus Azura small, it hardly takes up any space. This beautiful variety is therefore also suitable for small gardens. Possible locations are for example:

  • the balcony
  • the terrace
  • in the bed
  • as a pot plant in rock gardens
  • as a houseplant

Actually, the eucalyptus tree needs a warm, sunny location, which is why keeping it outdoors is recommended. However, you can also cultivate the genus Eucalyptus gunii, to which the Eucalyptus Azura also belongs, as a houseplant.

Cutting instructions

Time

It is best to prune the Eucalyptus Azura in spring. Then the tree sprouts again immediately afterwards and impresses with its intense blue color throughout the summer. However, shaping corrective cuts are permitted in autumn.

Tip

As a houseplant, you can prune your Eucalyptus Azura all year round.

Procedure

  1. Remove any branches that are growing crooked.
  2. Short the sprouts to two to three buds.
  3. Treat the incision sites with a wound protection product (€17.00 on Amazon).
  4. Do not cut into the roots of the plant.

Note: The eucalyptus is a very pruning-tolerant tree species. The Eucalyptus gunii variety grows very slowly at 40 cm per year and therefore does not need to be shortened as often.
