Distances play an important role when planting fruit trees. Distances to other trees, buildings or neighboring properties. Especially with espalier fruit, as it is usually cultivated in very small spaces. What does this have to do with when and how much distance is necessary?
What planting distance should you keep for espaliered fruit?
The ideal planting distance for espaliered fruit depends on the espalier shape: approx.2 m for free espalier shapes, narrower for a simple U-shape (ask the nursery). Approximately 20 cm from the support frame and at least 10 cm from the house wall. Legal minimum distances to neighboring properties are usually not required.
Planting distance from tree to tree
Even if it takes some time until the branch framework is in place, the space required must be planned for when planting. How large the planting distance must be between two trees also depends on the espalier shape you choose.
For free espalier forms, a distance of approx. 2 m is required. Espaliered fruit with a simple U-shape, on the other hand, can be planted more closely. Find out from the tree nursery what recommendations apply to the type of espalier fruit you have purchased.
Distance to the scaffolding
Trellis fruit needs a framework to which its branches are tied. That's why it has to be planted close to it. But not too close. The roots need space to develop in all directions. The visible parts of the tree also need their freedom.
- the branches get thicker over time
- they need space without pressing against the scaffolding
- Air must also be able to circulate around the branches
- a distance of about 20 cm is ideal
Distance to the house wall
It is not uncommon for fruit to be grown on espaliers on a house wall. There, too, the tree is planted some distance from the trellis. This in turn should be mounted at least 10 cm away from the wall. This allows air to circulate and rain-soaked leaves dry more easily and quickly.
Distance to neighboring property
Trellis fruit is often planted near a neighboring property. Be it that there is no other space available or that the espaliered fruit is intended to serve as a privacy screen. The legislators in most federal states are merciful here and do not provide for any minimum distances from neighbors for espaliered fruit.
