Espalier fruit only grows in two directions and is therefore space-saving. This advantage often tempts you to plant several trees at once. Espalier fruit can also be leaned against walls. Are there certain distances to keep?
What distances should be observed for espaliered fruit?
When planting espalier fruit, a distance of approx. 2 m should be maintained between the trees, 20 cm from the scaffolding and 60 cm between the branches. For trees up to 1.8 m high, no distance to the neighboring property is usually required.
Distance between two trees
Several fruit trees can be planted in a row to create a living and fruit-bearing hedge, for example. The small trees grow taller, but also wider. Their branches must not cross each other too early.
- The ideal planting distance depends on the types of espaliered fruit
- it is usually around 2 m
Distance to scaffolding
Trellis fruit grows on a supporting framework to which the branches are tied. When planting, the root ball should be placed approx. 20 cm away from the trellis structure.
Distance between two branches
The side branches of the fruit tree are attached horizontally to wires on the trellis. The lowest floor starts at around 60 cm floor height. The other floors should also follow with a minimum distance of 60 cm.
Distance to neighboring property
For espaliered fruit up to 1.8 m high, according to the so-called neighborhood law of most federal states, there is no need to maintain a distance from neighbors. Before planting, ask your local authority about the current regulations.
