Wasps are always becoming a problem in and around the house. Especially if they build their nests in places where they cause significant damage. This is particularly the case with house wall and roof insulation. So how can you get the situation under control?
How can you get rid of wasps in insulation?
To drive wasps out of the insulation, you should not fill up the entry holes. Instead, you wait until the wasp colony disperses in the fall and then repair damaged areas in the exterior plaster or brickwork.
How wasps get into insulation
Whether wasps can get into any insulation depends on the type and condition of the insulation. When it comes to facade or roof insulation, which many people add to their houses today, the following species can be endangered in their own way:
- ETICS insulation
- Curtain wall insulation
- Blow-in insulation
- Between rafter insulation
WDSV insulation is one of the most common forms of subsequent house facade insulation. However, the method does have weak points if it is not applied correctly. Normally, the external plaster over the insulation material is not penetrable by wasps. However, if the application work is negligent and there is no reinforcing fabric layer, loopholes can arise through which animals can enter.
With curtain wall insulation, the external cladding can also have gaps, such as slate cladding. Care should be taken to ensure that everything is well sealed, especially the edges - otherwise wasps can easily eat their way in here again and again, so even filling with silicone doesn't help.
With blown-in insulation, which is only possible with double-shell masonry, the outer wall remains in place during the insulation process. Possible damaged areas may be overlooked through which wasps gain access to the gap.
The insulation between the rafters under the roof is easy to install and is therefore popular among do-it-yourselfers. Unclean work and a lack of external inspection - i.e. the roof tiles - harbor great potential for wasp penetration. The space required between the insulation panels and the roof covering is also quite inviting for insects to build nests.
Repel wasps from the insulation
Once wasps have penetrated an insulated room, it is rather difficult to get rid of them acutely. After all, facade insulation in particular cannot be opened easily. What you shouldn't do is simply fill up entry holes. Firstly, this is animal cruelty and secondly, the wasps will try to eat their way free and thereby remove even more insulation material. It's best to wait until the condition clears up on its own in the fall and then repair any damaged areas in the exterior plaster or brickwork.
