In every fountain, various impurities accumulate over time: the limescale from the water settles on the water jets and other materials, algae turns the fountain and water green, and flowers and pollen, leaves and other dirt constantly fall into the water. Therefore, a fountain and the water in it must be cleaned regularly.

How can I keep the water in my fountain clean?

To keep the water in a fountain clean, you should keep it moving constantly, use aquatic plants, change the water regularly, clean the fountain thoroughly and keep the water values within the optimal range. Avoid using chlorine or biocides.

The best tips for cleaning fountains

The easiest way is probably to simply add chlorine or other biocides to the water to keep it clear and free of algae. However, this method is not recommended for outdoor fountains, as birds and insects like to use such a water source as a drink - and subsequently suffer poisoning. Instead, the only thing that helps is

  • to keep the water constantly flowing and to connect it to a planted garden pond, stream, etc.
  • moving water pollutes significantly less than “stagnant”
  • Aquatic plants in particular greatly reduce algae growth
  • changing the water regularly
  • let the fountain dry and clean it thoroughly before refilling
  • to keep the water values in an optimal range

Tip

You don't need expensive products to clean a dry well: potato water (i.e. the cooking water from potatoes) can be used wonderfully for this purpose.
