How can I bury a rain barrel in the garden?
To bury a rain barrel in the garden, you should first determine the appropriate location, dig a hole with a larger diameter than the rain barrel, insulate the inside of the barrel, insert it, fill the gaps with gravel and fill it with loose earth.

A conventional plastic rain barrel is most suitable. Other materials could potentially release harmful substances into the ground. How to proceed:
- Set a suitable location (see below).
- Dig a hole that corresponds to the depth of your rain barrel.
- The diameter should be slightly larger than that of the barrel.
- Remove all roots and stones from the soil.

- Put the rain barrel in the hole.
- Fill the remaining gaps with fine gravel.
- Thus you create a drainage that protects the soil in the event of overflow.
- Fill in the rest with loose soil.
Location
You don't necessarily have to bury your rain barrel directly on the wall of the house. You can choose any spot in the garden with a pipe or hose that directs the water from the downspout into the bin. Just be careful not to let small children or pets fall into the rain barrel. If there are no deep-rooted trees nearby, this makes the work much easier. Do not expose your rain barrel to the blazing sun. There is increased water evaporation here.
What to pay attention to?
You can only empty a buried rain barrel by manually skimming the water or pumping it out of the rain barrel. If you still want to tip out the rain barrel occasionally to make it easier to clean, it is best to equip the model with handles before you lower the barrel into the ground. You can use these to pull the container out of the ground. This is particularly useful because even a buried rain barrel is not completely frost-proof. You should therefore dig up the bin again for overwintering.
